AN OLDER POST FROM MY FACEBOOK NOTES
Enfermero sounds less feminine...
Enfermero sounds less feminine...
In Ecuador, a male nurse is called an Enfermero...
And when I came to Quito, the population of Enfermeros in Quito doubled.
But I think Enfermero sounds less feminine than Nurse... doesn't it?
In the states, when I say what my occupation is, people think of babies eating off their mothers' chests...
I think from now on, I'm going to refer to my job as an Enfermero...
And go by Mateo... Matt is too common.
Anyways, today was my last day at Clinicas Pichincha. The first two weeks was spent in the Emergency Room (aka... La Emergencia). It was a small ER with only 5 beds and 2 trauma beds. It was kinda slow compared to TMH's ER.
But, I was able to listen to Spanish Medical Terminology like...
Abra la boca...
Saque la lengua...
Orine sus pantalones...
(see bottom for note)
The last week was spent in the ICU (aka... Cuidados Intensivos). It was kind of slow, so I wasn't able to see as much as in the ER. But the people were really nice.
But my time at the hospital in summary...
The following are the highlights...
1. Getting to take a picture with Nicole, a sweet young girl with whom I practiced my Spanish for a few minutes. She broke her leg when she tripped over her younger sister.
2. Getting to sign Nicole's caste.
Looking back on it, I should have been more patriotic and drew the USA Flag on her caste instead of just spelling U.S.A.
Actually, looking back on it, I don't know why I wrote USA at all. At the time, I thought she was going to forget which Mateo it was that signed her caste. So I added USA on there to specify WHICH Mateo wrote the heart. I'm stupid.
3. Getting my name embroidered onto some scrubs. I'm going to wear these when I start working in the states.
4. Seeing the nurses where the old fashioned caps was cute.
5. Heating fluids in a microwave.
It was interesting to see the nurses heat fluids up in their microwave. I thought it was kind of funny that they heated IV fluids in the same thing that they heat up their hot pockets.
6. Seeing mercury OUTSIDE of the sphygmomanometer.
AND PLAYING WITH IT!
Just kidding. I was afraid to even touch it. Mercury is toxic. I think it can be absorbed topically...
I told the Resident Doctor that it was toxic but she touched it anyway.
I hope she dies to prove a point.
:-) Just kidding.
Note: No estas chevere a menos que tu orinas tus pantalones...
