AN OLDER POST FROM MY FACEBOOK NOTES

Quasi-Mateo
My birthday was over a week ago and I'm just now writing about it...
I'm lazy...
On my birthday, I went to the Basilica del Voto Nacional with the Sisters Gortaire... and Phillipe (the novio de Annie)...
Its interesting that my Gringo ticket for the Basilica cost twice the amount of the Ecuatoriano ticket.
I guess it must cost a lot for the English translation on my ticket. Spending twice the amount was well worth the English... :-/
The inside of the church was very purty...
Nikki told me that the church was built solely on donations. I asked her "Is that why there are holes in the beautiful stain-glass window?"
She confirmed my inquiry and added that it is a belief in Quito that when the Basilica is finished, it will be the end of the world. I told her that that scared me. She said it scared her too.
We then walked multiple flights of stares to the top of the Basilica.
I agreed with this guy.
Then we crossed the rafters of the Cathedral like Indiana Jones.
Here is a view from the top of one of lower towers.
We then went to the other side of the church to go even higher.
One thing about Quito (and Ecuador) is that people don´t sue each other nearly as often, which means people don't care if you die on their property. Therefore, Phillipe and I were able to climb the outside of the church towers.
It was pretty cool. I felt like Quasimoto, climbing the tower of the Notre Dame.
Look Ma... No hands...
Nowhere in the US could you climb the outside of a 7 story church cathedral.
I guess this sign covers the church from any lawsuits if someone falls off the outside of the tower.
Here are some pretty views of Quito from the tower.
When we returned to the bottom of the church, there was a festival going on outside. Some elementary school was graduating and having a performace.
It was such a popular festival that there was a camera and crew from the local news station.
I wanted to be on camera, but they wouldn't let me. Their loss.
